These prepositions are always followed by an object in the dative case:

aus (out of/from): indicates origin; someone or something comes from an enclosed or defined space (country, town, building)

Nimm das Bier aus dem Kühlschrank!

Jens kommt aus Deutschland/aus Hamburg.

außer (except for):

Die ganze Familie ist hier außer meiner Schwester.

bei (for/at, at the home of/near): indicates a fixed location (name of the place where someone is working or living)

Er arbeitet bei der Post/bei McDonald’s.

Ich wohne bei meinen Eltern.

Potsdam ist bei Berlin.

mit (with/by):

Ich gehe mit meinem Freund ins Kino.

Sie fahren mit dem Bus nach Berlin.

nach (after/to): indicates after a point in time and direction (use with cities and countries without article)

Nach dem Essen sind wir eingeschlafen.

Wir sind nach Frankfurt/nach Spanien geflogen.

*Achtung* = nach Hause (moving in a direction toward home) = Ich gehe nach Hause.

seit (since/for):

Marc lebt seit dem letzten Sommer in München.

Mein Bruder lebt seit einem Jahr in Frankreich.

von (from/of/about): indicates that someone or something comes from an open space or from a person

Maria kommt vom Markt zurück. / Von meinem Bruder habe ich eine Kamera bekommen.

Eine Freundin von meiner Mutter hat geheiratet.

Meine Mutter hat oft von dieser Freundin erzählt.

zu (to/for/with): indicates movement toward a place or person

Wir gehen heute zum Strand. / Ich gehe zu meiner Tante.

Zu der Pizza haben wir Rotwein getrunken.
